Record Sealing and Expungement in Warren, Ohio

Trumbull · Mahoning · Ashtabula

An old case shouldn’t keep costing you jobs, apartments or opportunities. Ohio law lets many people seal or expunge their criminal records, and the rules have expanded in recent years. If you were told "no" before, it’s worth checking again.

Sealing vs. Expungement

  • Sealing hides the record from the public and most employers. It still exists, and a few agencies (like law enforcement) can see it.

  • Expungement permanently destroys the record. It usually requires a longer wait.

When You Can Apply

The waiting period starts after your final discharge: jail, probation, fines and court costs all finished.

  • Dismissed or found not guilty: No wait

  • Grand jury "no bill": 2 years

  • Minor misdemeanor: 6 months

  • Misdemeanor: 1 year

  • Felony of the 4th or 5th degree: 1 year (expungement after 11 years)

  • Felony of the 3rd degree: 3 years (expungement after 13 years)

What Usually Can’t Be Sealed

  • Most first- and second-degree felonies

  • Most felony offenses of violence

  • First-degree misdemeanor domestic violence

  • Traffic offenses, including OVI

  • Certain sex offenses and offenses involving children

There are exceptions, so if you’re not sure, ask. I’ll look at your record and tell you what qualifies.

How It Works

  1. Free review. Tell me your case numbers or what’s on your record.

  2. I prepare and file the application with the court where the case was handled.

  3. The prosecutor can respond, and the court sets a hearing.

  4. The judge decides. If granted, the record is sealed or expunged and the agencies are notified.

The process usually takes a few months from filing.

Juvenile Records

Juvenile records can often be sealed six months after the case ends, and many are expunged automatically at age 23 or five years after sealing. More on juvenile cases

Fees

Record sealing is handled for a flat fee per case. The court’s filing fee is not included. If you have several cases, ask about a combined quote.
